Clos des Chênes is an excellent climat in the Volnay Premier Cru appellation, situated between Meursault and Pommard.
The vineyard lies on marl dating back to about 160 million years ago, at an altitude of around 313 metres. Situated at the top of the hillside, facing the rising sun and with a steep slope of up to 15%, the vines dig deep into the soil to get the full richness of the terroir.
We have conducted a study of this terroir, directed by Françoise Vannier-Petit, which shows that its soil, a mixture of clay, silt, calcium carbonate and steep slope, offers an ideal balance between drainage, water retention and hydro-nitrogen supply for the vine plants. This balance ensures optimum ripening of the grapes every year, whatever the weather conditions of the vintage. The soil of this plot is the true architect of the wine, shaping its finesse, tension and beautiful minerality.
